Sarasota Bay Area

Got Sand?

Of course we do!!!

And magnificent sand it is.  The entire Sarasota Bay area is absolutely wonderful!

Marina Jack

a1 20180313_111151

Right at the edge of downtown Sarasota, Marina Jack is a marina for small crafts as well as over-the-top yachts.  There is a nice park with facilities and a snack shop right on the bay that is pet friendly.  Marina Jack restaurant has wonderful food and views.  There are three different styles of dining within the restaurant.  I think the car of choice at the valet is a Bentley.

If you’re feeling ambitious, take a stroll from Marina Jack all the way to St Armands, have a nice relaxing lunch, and then head back.  If your pooch is up for the adventure, take her too.  Many restaurants are pet friendly.  I think my girl has gotten too old to make this journey again.

Siesta Key

Consistently voted American’s #1 Beach, Siesta Key is pretty amazing.  It’s beautiful crystal clear turquoise water, pure white sugar sand, and cute little quaint town make it  a great place to live and vacation.

n 0Panorama1

There is parking at the beach and parking in town, along the street, and in public lots.  There are facilities, a snack bar, and overlook platform……right in the heart of Siesta Key.  The first time I came here in 2013, there was only a gravel parking lot – nothing else.  Wow, how this area has grown in such a short time.

We tried to make sure no one got to close to our space, since it was so crowded – haha.

n 0 20160727_122018

There is even a wheelchair/stroller walkway right out to the water.

Just like on Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key has a Donut Experiment too.  Check it out.  The donuts are made fresh while you wait and they are Delicious!

Right next door is Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt.  We love it too!

n 0GAN_8273

They make the ice cream creations right in front of your eyes.

They start with liquid, add the nitrogen and within seconds you have ice cream.  Pretty amazing and it tastes GREAT!

Anna Maria Island

This island may be little , but it’s mighty!  It’s why we moved here.

b 0 20160719_094510

AMI is the perfect mix of a quaint little beach town surrounded by Caribbean-like beaches.  No vendors trying to push their merchandise on you and sand that you can actually walk on.

b 0GAN_3430

Bean Point…..the northern tip of AMI.

b 20171218_134855

My husband flies out of Sarasota (SRQ) often so he took a few pictures for me.

In the top image, the northern half of AMI is showing along with Passage Key.  In the right background is Bradenton and to the left is Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Tampa Bay.

The bridge at the middle edge on the right is Rt 64/Manatee Ave. (above)

On the right is Anna Maria Island, northern tip (Bean Point), in the center is Passage Key or what the SunCoast Boating Divas (my boating buddies) call Naked Island, left center is Egmont Key, a historic site with a lighthouse, that can only be accessed by boat.  The top portion of the photo is Fort Desoto and St Pete.

b 20171218_134756

Who doesn’t love this sign?  It means the beach is near – not just any beach – a magnificent one.

b 20170627_104801

The Lower the Latitude the Better the Attitude…..so true!

b 20171229_152719

We have the perfect sand.  It’s known as white sugar sand.  It’s more like white powdered sugar sand.  On the negative side – once it gets in your car or camera, it stays forever!

b 20170511_103322

On the positive side – it feels wonderful on your feet and it doesn’t get hot!  What, you say.  That’s right.  Even with the hot FL sun beating down on it for hours, it stays just warm, not hot.  It is made of 99% quartz.

b 20170511_101555

Be Careful!  You might find yourself up to your neck in it!

b 0IMG_8429

Holmes Beach If you enter the island from Rt 64, Holmes Beach is your first stop.  Where Rt 64/Manatee Ave ends you’ll find the Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe.  We’ve had breakfast there several times and it’s always good.  They have all you can eat pancakes and they are HUGE!  We’ve tried many different things – YUM!

b 20171008_091458

Sometimes we can get a table right on the sand.  How perfect.  Last year we came for Mother’s Day and they gave flowers to all the moms.  It was a perfect start to a fun beach day.  The above photo was October and the lower was December – just a few days before Christmas.

b 0 20171222_100049

The sand here isn’t as nice as the north and south ends of the beach.  It has more shells and crushed shells that make up its sand but it’s still a beautiful beach.

b 20170901_105307

There’s lots of parking, some shaded.  It’s a good place to park and ride from.  Since it’s pretty close to the middle of the island, you can choose to either go north or south, or both with lunch in between.

b 20170511_094008

Speaking of lunch……They have shaded picnic tables with an awesome view of the beach.  For convenience, this beach is great.  Easy on, easy off the island.

b 20170509_120546

Anna Maria Island…..the town.  Once you get on the island, just start heading north on Gulf Drive.  It changes names a few times but remains Gulf Drive until the end.  You’ll notice it’s the main road for the island.

b 0GAN_3227t

The Sandbar Restaurant has the best location for dining – right on the beach.  The food is good too.  We’ve taken lots of guests here.  The same owners own Mar Vista on Longboat Key.  It has docks right in front so just cruise right in.  It too is a fun atmosphere with good food.

b00 20170115_133603

Check out Sandbar’s cute gift shop.  It has lots of cool things but it’s expensive.

b 0 20180222_142721

The water is warm enough for some of us locals from about early/mid May to mid October.  (Al and his Mum)

0 20180523_140824

If you start walking north toward Bean Point (the tip) you’ll find less people but more birds.

b 0GAN_3411

Please don’t feed the birds or leave your food behind.  It’s harmful to them and it turns them into real pests.  Nobody likes a pest.

b 0 20180222_135035

b 0GAN_6901

There are many beach access points all over the island.

b 0GAN_3309

One day we were just swimming and a manatee showed up.  He loved the attention and stayed for at least an hour.  We finally had to leave for lunch.  He had many admirers.  Who doesn’t love a manatee?

b 0GAN_3531

Somedays the waves are a little bigger than other days.  Leave the paddle board at home but bring the boogie board.

b 0GAN_4235

These were all taken around the same spot.  Interesting how quickly the water can change from day to day or even from morning to afternoon.

0 20170619_124733_001

These were during Tropical Storm Cindy in June 2017.  My pictures really don’t do justice to the size of the waves.  These girls were worn out after a couple of hours of fighting these waves.

20170619_124711_001

My girls – they love this island and they love to jump.  One was a gymnast and one is a dancer.

b 0GAN_4198

Lots of sand dunes.  They are protected so stay off.  Sea grass is protected too.

b 0 20160719_111905

I love the calm water.  These are my favorite days.

b 0 20170917_115728_001

I love when it’s not crowded.  The crowds come to the beach on Christmas and Thanksgiving, during spring break – which lasts for weeks, on the main holidays like July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and also during President’s Day week (the schools in the northeast take a winter break).  It’s hard to find parking during those times and it’s hard to find personal space on the beach.

b 20170627_120434

Be sure to build a sand creation before you leave.  We have built turtles, sharks, dogs, alligators, cakes, castles, and even entire villages.  It’s great family fun.

Watch where you step.  You won’t want to crush a mermaid.

b 0GAN_4601

Round the bend and the views start to change.

b 0 20180222_140429

The Gulf of Mexico turns into Tampa Bay.  Egmont Key in now in sight.

b 0 20170816_090711_001

The shore begins to get a little rocky.

b 0IMG_8389

We find different birds.

Different, yet amazing.

b 0GAN_4137

Once we even found a flamingo feather.

b 0GAN_4081

These crabs had quite a battle going on for a while.

b 0GAN_4089

b 0IMG_8526

LOVE LOVE LOVE the starfish!

b 0IMG_8512

They are very tickley on your hand.  I’m sure that’s a word.

b 0IMG_8510

Do you think this is a mom and her baby?  I can certainly see the resemblance.  Maybe that’s the dad up above……

b 0IMG_8504

This guy was very spiny and attached himself to our anchor.

b 20170621_184027

Such a scenic little park – a nice place to stop for a few minutes and enjoy the view of Tampa Bay and Sunshine Skyway Bridge.  This park is between the City Pier and the Rod & Reel Pier.  We’ve eaten there a couple of times for lunch.  It’s good but not WOW!

b 0IMG_8376

Go out on the pier when the fish are feeding and you’ll be in for a real treat.  How does such a small bird eat such a large fish.  We once saw a dolphin with a fish in his mouth.  He was tossing it up and catching it.  I think he was showing off for us, especially since he had a smile on his face the whole time.

b 0IMG_8475

We rented bikes on our first trip here but now we bring our own.

b 0IMG_8353

Watch for dolphins.  They are everywhere.

b 0GAN_1533

From the Gulf heading toward AMI.

b 0 20180420_114207

Looking at the City Pier.  It is closed for repairs since Hurricane Irma.  So sad.

b 0 20170816_095435

Love walking out on the pier.  Be sure to wear shoes.  It gets very hot and often we see people running to get off the hot boards.

b 0 20170816_095311

b 0 20170816_083835

The Tampa Bay water is usually very calm and nice for paddle boarding.

b 0 20170322_145549

We don’t see water spouts all that often, but when we do, they are pretty cool.  Life jackets and whistles are requires on all vessels.  A vessel is defined as anything that floats and has a paddle.  The waters are patrolled by the Coast Guard, the local police and the sheriff.  They do issue tickets – I haven’t had one.  If you’re under 12, I think you have to wear a jacket.

b 0 20170816_091714

If you’re an early riser, come out for sunrise.

b 0GAN_3278

You won’t be disappointed.

b 0GAN_3288

There are plenty of fun shops along Pine Ave.

b 20171008_102939

The Donut Experiment is a must must must DO.  The donuts are amazing!!!

b 20170914_105157

During season expect to wait 30, 60, 90 minutes for fresh donuts.

b 0IMG_8407

They close early, so come before lunch.  You can watch the whole process.

b 0IMG_8408

The last time I was here, June 2018, they changed their sign to remain open until 3pm.

This was our first batch ever.  Spring break 2015.  I waited 90 minutes for them!!!  I went in to buy 3 but met some people in line, who said you just can’t leave without at least a dozen.  I settled for 8.  The three of us scarfed these down in about 3 minutes flat.  They were delicious, although I got the chocolate with bacon for my daughter who absolutely loves bacon, it was our least favorite.  It didn’t go to waste, but we’ve never ordered it again.

b 0IMG_8409

Just seeing these pictures and writing about them makes my mouth water.  We are actually going to get some this weekend.  My birthday is Friday.  My husband’s is Saturday, and Mother’s Day is Sunday.

b0 20171009_095535

We have introduced many family and friends to these wonderful donuts and I think everyone gives them a thumbs up.  A new location opened last summer (2017) in Siesta Key.  It’s not quite the same experience as eating them on the old-fashioned porch but still tasty.  They are served warm.  I don’t like them hot.  It changes the flavor of the toppings and is just not as good to me, so if they ever ask me if I want to wait for hot ones, I say no.

Right next door to The Donut Experiment is Poppo’s Taqueria.  They share the front porch.  It’s a neat place to eat, the food is very good, but the service is usually unfriendly.  We’ve been there many times only because we love the food, but now they’ve changed their chip recipe and we noticed that some new options have opened just down the road.  There are other Poppo’s around Bradenton with much friendly staff.  The chips are made fresh when you order and you order (Chipotle style) picking and choosing your style (bowl, burrito, tacos…., protein, veggies, extras….).  The chips used to be very thin and crisp but recently the they have been thicker and just not as tasty to us.  This is true for all locations.

If you walk the entire tip of the island and cross Pine Ave (where the City Pier is), it is about 3 miles.  Go ahead and have the donut!

Life’s A Beach…..Enjoy it every day!

b 0 20170705_120329

Along Rt 64 just before you cross the bridge to AMI, there are 2 bodies of water – one on each side of the road.  On the right (north) you might notice the horses that give water rides then you might find this bus renting kayaks and paddle boards.  There’s nothing exciting to see, but if you’re a beginner, this is a good place to learn.  The water is almost always calm.

b 20180222_120030

The left side (south) is Palma Sola Bay.  Many dogs beach here.  There is occasionally fly boarding.  Lots of jet skis in this area too.

w 20170509_105933

The Bradenton Red Barn Flea Market has a great selection of not only shells but lots of treasures.  The Mexican restaurant, well it’s just an ordering and pickup window, has great authentic food.  The spicy pork is SPICY!  YUM!

Remember, leave the live shells in the ocean.  A woman was recently arrested and sentenced to 15 days in jail for taking live shells in Florida.

Hiking, Biking, & Kayaking Around Sarasota

Living here we hear about so many places for hiking, biking, and kayaking, but I have to admit that I have not been to all of them yet, so I will highlight the ones I am familiar with.

Ted Sperling Nature Park at South Lido.  It’s a little hard to find, but a nice spot to launch a paddle board or kayak.  You can stay in open, protected water, visit a sandbar, glide through the mangroves, or tool around in the canals, or do it all in a single day.

This park has parking, a loading/unloading area, facilities, and even fresh water to rinse your board.

o 0 20170321_151056

On-board life vest and whistle are mandatory in FL.  Children under 12 must be wearing a life vest.  It’s a good idea to bring a dry bag for your phone/camera and keys.  Most paddle boards and kayaks have straps or bungies to secure your belongings.  We usually bring a mesh bag to keep our shoes in so they don’t float away while we’re not looking.  Bring water for sure and even a snack if you like.  My daughter and I like to float out and have a little snack while we just talk and enjoy each other’s company.

o 0 20170401_155245

This was taken a few years ago, before we lived here.  We rented a 2 person kayak for Abby and dad, and I rented a paddle board.  The water was calm and warm.  It was a great day for it.

o 0IMG_8605

Snead Island is on the north side of the Manatee River, west of Palmetto.

q 0 20170403_103717

Its western most tip is called Emerson Point.  This is where Manatee River meets Tampa Bay.  Right at the tip, there is a sandbar that stretches straight out for just over a mile.  We have found lots of sea critters out there.  This entire island is easy to bike around.  It’s small and flat.

q 0 20170314_094637

The park has lots of history.  Information signs and boards can be found throughout.  Most of the park is bike and dog friendly; however, some areas do not allow bikes.  I think dogs can go everywhere.

q 0 20170314_094651

There are lots of trails and the roads through the park, all the way to the end at Emerson Point, that are paved.  There are picnic areas and facilities.  On the east side of the park (closer to Tampa Bay) there is a lookout tower.

q 0 20170403_102334

Robinson’s Preserve is located on the south side of the Manatee River and Tampa Bay. This park also has parking, a loading/unloading area, facilities, and even fresh water to rinse your board.  Bonus, there is an overlook tower.

q 1 20170322_151853

Climb to the top and you’ll see, Anna Maria Island, Passage Key, Egmont Key, Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Terra Ceia Bay…..

q 0 20171126_114014

Dogs can climb the tower too.

q 0 20171126_113410

q 0 20171126_114812

You can hike or kayak to the overlook tower.

q 0 20171126_115242

Plenty of hiking trails.

q 0 20171126_123106

During low tide, this part of Tampa Bay looks like the Death Valley Salt Flats.

q 0 20180114_152551

Nice view of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

q 0 20180114_153025

Some the hiking/biking trails are elevated for the best views throughout the park.

q 0 20180114_153444

Share the road with bikers and hikers.

q 0 20180114_153833

Other places I want to try for biking and kayaking are Myakka State Park, for biking, the Venice Bike Trail/Legacy Trail.

Marina Jack is a nice place to watch a sunset and walk your dog.  You can also walk across the Ringling/Sarasota Bridge.

……..

Englewood

South of Sarasota, south of Venice even, is Englewood.  I don’t know much about the area, but it is pretty for boating.  The water is blue and lots of dolphins and manatees live here.

Englewood does not have the white sugar sand that its neighbors to the north have but its Gulf waters are fantastic.

l 0 20180414_113746

As we were loading up our boat, a mom manatee and her newborn baby were hanging out just behind our boat.  We took our time so they could move on without us scaring them.  The mom was helping to push the baby up to the surface.  It was so cool to see.  Then another larger manatee came in too.  The dock master said that he has seen the larger ones but never the baby, so perhaps he was just born.

l 0GAN_1876

We stayed in the ICW and anchored in Ski Ally and then walked along a short path to reach the Gulf where we found clear blue water and a shell tree.  Not many people were out on the beach here.  Perhaps it’s a long walk if you don’t come by boat.

l 20180414_113818

In a different area, we hit the shell jackpot.

l 0 20180414_145117

Not that my girl needs any more shells, but she helped a friend find some treasures and they found a lot.

l 0 20180414_145516

South of Cape Haze Marina

l 0GAN_1928

We even found a ferry that transports people and vehicles across the ICW to the barrier island.

BEWARE of Red Tide especially if you have any respiratory issues.  I had childhood asthma and I can definitely tell when Red Tide is in the air.  I start couching and experience a little shortness of breath.  It’s not threatening to me but it is uncomfortable.

SunCoast Sunsets

It’s easy to see a nice sunset.  Just look outside at sunset.

This might be my favorite.  Anna Maria Island is in the background.

r 0GAN_4270

I hope you enjoy looking at sunsets, sunrises, and even a moonrise.  I have lots so I tried really hard to post just a few, but I didn’t know which ones to eliminate.  I posted a fraction of what I have, but more than a few.  Enjoy!

r 0GAN_4288

This was taken near Sandbar Restaurant on Anna Maria Island.

r 0GAN_3260

This is a typical crowd that gathers all along the barrier islands to say goodbye to one more day.  The crowd usually claps at the last glimpse of the sun.

My goofy girls on our first night of vacation a couple of years ago – before we moved here.  We vacationed here for 2 weeks during July to see how we liked the summer.  We survived and now we live here!

r 0GAN_3240

In all fairness, this is a moonrise.  It was taken from Anna Maria Island looking east.

r 0GAN_9970w

This was the sunset that was happening behind us.

r 0IMG_9939

Again, to be perfectly honest, this is looking east to the City Pier from Anna Maria Island so it’s an early morning sunrise.  The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is in the way background.  This pier is closed due to damage from Hurricane Irma (September 10, 2017).

Coquina Beach & AMI Sound

Coquina Beach is at the southern end of Anna Maria Island.  It is a great family beach with lots of free parking – some shaded – picnic tables, grills, a walking trail, life guards, facilities, and a snack bar.  We did not care for the food, but if you’re in a pinch, it’s there. Do not park in no parking zones, unless you consider a $35 ticket a fair price to pay for parking.  You might get towed though.  Also, parking with your tire just barely on the pavement or on the line may get you a ticket too.  Last Memorial Day, a super busy day here, we saw dozens of cars with tickets.  The head-in parking at Bradenton Beach is deep and some people parked 2 cars deep.  The second car always got ticketed.

Watch out for cyclist.  This is a popular place for tourists and locals to bike.

Looking from the Gulf straight toward Coquina Beach.

We grilled out here for the first time this summer (2018).  They have plenty of grills but we brought our own just to make sure we could cook our burgers.  Raw hamburger may have been okay as a kid, but it’s disgusting as an adult.

0 20180715_123201

They were delish!

0 20180715_123215

We even brought cannolis.  YUM!

Just a short stroll and you’re at the beach.

Around the bend near Longboat Pass.  The walking/biking trail runs from the end of the park/beach, where the bridge to Longboat Key starts, all the way to Bradenton Beach.  It’s mostly shaded.  During ‘season’ (October to May) there is a flea market/festival at Coquina every Wednesday and Sunday.  It features local crafts and specialty items and foods.

f GAN_6923

There is a strong current here but it’s nice for wading.  People fish here too.

f 20170511_130710

This image was taken from the bridge over Longboat Pass.  Dolphins, manatees, and stingrays frequent this area.

f 0 20170311_102132

Around the corner from Coquina, we are looking out on Jewfish Key.  The island is private but the sandbars are open to the public and one of the most popular spots for boaters.

f 0GAN_6993

This is a great place for shelling.  As you can see, my girl has collected quite a few treasures.

The squirrels are quite friendly.  They come right up to you and beg for food.  They are not really intimidated by dogs either.  Dogs are not allowed at this beach or even on the trail.  I didn’t know they couldn’t walk on the trail until the sheriff stopped by.

f 0GAN_6933

Plenty of fascinating birds.

f 0GAN_7024

Jump on the parasail boat in Bradenton Beach on the east side of the island (Anna Maria Island).  I have parasailed in several countries and in the Keys, but not here yet.  I want to.  I’m waiting for my daughter to finish school – just a few weeks to go until summer break!

The fishermen say that the white pelicans, which are cousins to the gray pelicans, are larger and more aggressive.  They steal the fish right out of their cousins’ mouths!  How rude!  They go north for the summer.  Some people say that this is where the term ‘snow bird’ came from.

e 0 20171129_134846

There are several restaurants in the Cortez area that can be accessed from Cortez Rd as well as by boat.  The one we visit most often is Tide Tables.  The food and the service are good.  We always sit outside overlooking the ICW – Intracoastal Waterway.

Head east at marker 48 to find Tide Tables, Swordfish Grill, Cortez Kitchen, and The Starfish Co.

s2 0 20171201_120949

Just past the Cortez Bridge on the northeast side is Seafood Shack.  The food is okay and the atmosphere says ‘boat life.’  Dogs are welcome on the patio.

On the west side of the ICW, is a cute little place called Bridge Tender.  It has a boat dock or can be reached by car or bike in Bradenton Beach.  They have live music, outdoor dining – even some tables right at the water’s edge.

None of waterfront restaurants in this area are WOW to me, they are just okay with a nice location.

Riverwalk – Downtown Bradenton

The Riverwalk has something for everyone.

u GAN_3032

Paved and brick walking and biking path that runs right along the Manatee River.

u 0 20170128_102523

Keep your eyes open.  Dolphins play in this area frequently and sometimes manatees swim by.

There is free parking at various places right at the Riverwalk.

The marina is a fun place to hang out and watch the big boats come in and go out.  Plus it’s a great place to take awesome pictures.

u 20180228_114833

The water is usually like glass first thing in the morning.

The Greene Bridge is in the background.  From the Palmetto side of the river, you can walk out on a pier that stretches more than half way across the river.  The Greene Bridge has bike lanes in both directions and a separate walking lane with a concrete divider from the traffic.

Manatee River

It’s big! I grew up not too far from the Ohio River and I thought it was big.  Manatee River is Big.  Bradenton/Palmetto Regatta Marina is so pretty.

t 0 20180420_085549

The river has several marinas and restaurants, is boat and kayak friendly, has dolphins and manatees, and connects to the ICW, Braden River, Terra Ceia Bay, and Tampa Bay.

Watching the pelicans dive for food is always fun.  During the winter months, we also have white pelicans.  They are larger and more aggressive.  They come inland to our fresh water ponds too.

When we first saw them last year, they looked like swans across the pond.

Lunch by the water is always special.  Our favorite places along the Manatee River are Riverhouse at the Bradenton/Palmetto Regatta Marina on the Palmetto side of the river and Pier 22 on the Riverwalk on the Bradenton side of the river.  Both have very good to excellent food.  Pier 22 is probably my fav.

The River Regatta is held on the river in downtown Bradenton at the end of January or beginning of February each year.  It brings over 100,000 people and has activities on both sides of the river.  The Greene Bridge is closed to traffic and just used for pedestrians.

Around Town

You don’t have to just stay at the water when in Sarasota.  Look around, it’s beautiful everywhere!  We have lots of parks.  People are very active in this area.

d 0 20170409_195536

Mixon’s Farm is a fun place to visit.  They have fresh fruits and veggies during season.  They process their orange juice and allow guests to tour the facility.  Be sure to check out their gift shop and ice cream counter. The orange twist ice cream is delish!

Take the train to see the wildlife sanctuary and learn about how the critters were rescued and cared for now, and also learn about Mixon’s growing process and fruit trees.

d 20170830_111204

Benderson Park in Lakewood Ranch near the UTC Mall is a very nice park with a huge walking/biking paved trail around a nice sized lake.  The world rowing championships were held here in 2017.

d 20170926_133503

d 20170926_133947

We have many good restaurants without having to go to a chain.  This Thai Fry fish is from The Clam House in Palmetto.  We’ve had it several times and it’s always good.  We like everything we’ve had from there.

d 20180414_195718

Alligators cannot survive for more than a few days in salt water so don’t expect to see any at the beach.  Crocodiles like salt water and are not native to our part of FL.  If they are here, they were brought here.  If you see a body of fresh water in Florida, expect that it has a gator in it.  They are everywhere.  The ones we’ve experienced are very timid of people.  If we get too close, they jump in the water.  I like it like that.
